The Arboretum at UCSC and the The Off Kilter Quilters present
“Baroquen Threads”
The show will remain on display at Hort II from 11 to 3 on May 28, May 30 through June 3nd and June 5th. (No show on June 4)
“Baroquen Threads” is the title of the Fiber Arts Show at the UCSC Arboretum. The pieces in the show are made by the Off Kilter Quilters, a Pajaro Valley Quilt Association small quilt group. This will be their third show at the Arboretum.
This year the show is part of “Flowers and Music of the World,” co-sponsored by the UCSC Arboretum and the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival on May 29 between 1 and 5 p.m. The event will feature musicians playing different genres of music at various locations throughout the garden together with food and beverage tastings offered at each location. To get from one location to another, of course, you will have the pleasure of strolling through the beautiful and unique gardens of the Arboretum.
For this show, each quilter has chosen a riff on the word “Baroque” as the theme for her quilt. One of the quilts is titled “Walking on Baroquen Glass.” Roz Dinatale, the quilter, says of her quilt, “This challenge was very inspiring. There is a song “Walking On Broken Glass” sung by Annie Lennox (2009). The lyrics describe a woman who is anguished over a breakup. But, I kept thinking of what more could I add to make the quilt interesting and fun? The piece needed to have a quilt (of course) and the cat is curiously looking at the broken glass. Little Nell is crying because she not only “baroque” her favorite blue dish but cut her foot on the glass.
Another quilter, Sandra Hart, says of her quilt “Baroquen Dishes,” I started with the quilt pattern, Broken Dishes, but the result looked just like a tile floor. So, I went further and digitally smashed a whole set of Fiesta Ware™ on my floor. I created a "crack brush" in Photoshop, applied it to digital images of the dishes, piled the broken bits up on the floor, and added a few shadows to provide some dimension.
The fiber art creations made especially for this show will be on display at Hort II from 11 to 3 on May 28, May 30 through June 3nd and June 5th. The show will be closed June 4th. To attend the show on May 29th there is an admission fee for all of the music and tastings of $40 general, $30 Arboretum Members and Baroque Festival Sponsors, $20 for age 18 and under.
